Everything you need to know about pansexuality, what it means and what it means to identify as pan.

What does pansexual mean?

Pansexuality refers to a sexual orientation where a person is attracted to individuals regardless of their gender or gender identity. This means that someone who is pansexual can experience romantic or sexual attraction to people of any gender, including male, female, non-binary, and genderfluid individuals. The key idea behind pansexuality is that gender does not play a role in determining whether someone is attracted to a person.

It is often summed up as being “attracted to people, not genders,” or as our founder Jake Hook says, “hearts not parts!”

While this is similar to bisexuality (attraction to two or more genders), pansexuality emphasizes the inclusivity of all genders and may be used by individuals who feel that their attraction is not limited by gender at all.

Pansexual is a sexual orientation that describes individuals who are attracted to people regardless of their gender or gender identity. For pansexual people, gender is not a determining factor in their romantic or sexual attraction. This inclusivity makes pansexuality distinct in its emphasis on seeing beyond traditional gender categories.

Key Features of Pansexuality:

  1. Attraction Beyond Gender: Pansexual individuals may be attracted to men, women, nonbinary people, genderfluid individuals, and more, without preference or limitation based on gender.
  2. Gender Irrelevance: Unlike some other orientations, gender or gender presentation does not play a central role in their attraction.
  3. Fluid and Inclusive: Pansexuality celebrates attraction that transcends societal gender norms and binaries.

The Pansexual Flag:

The pansexual pride flag, created in 2010, consists of three horizontal stripes:

  • Pink: Represents attraction to femininity or women.
  • Yellow: Represents attraction to nonbinary, genderqueer, or genderfluid individuals.
  • Blue: Represents attraction to masculinity or men.

Pansexuality highlights the freedom of love and attraction unbound by traditional gender classifications. Many pansexual people feel their identity is empowering and aligns with a broader acceptance of gender diversity.
