Find out more about the Genderfluid Identity. The flag, what it means and what it means to identify as genderfluid.
Genderfluid is a gender identity where a person’s gender identity or expression shifts or changes over time. Someone who identifies as genderfluid may experience different genders at different times, or their sense of gender might fluctuate between more masculine, feminine, or other gender identities.
For example, a genderfluid person might feel more aligned with a female gender identity one day, a male identity the next, or something outside of the binary entirely. Their gender expression (how they present themselves in terms of clothing, behavior, and other gendered cues) may also shift depending on how they feel in a given moment.
Key aspects of genderfluidity:
- Fluidity: The core feature of genderfluidity is that the individual’s gender is not fixed or static; it can change over time.
- Diversity: Genderfluid people may experience a variety of gender identities, which can be either within the binary (male/female) or outside of it (non-binary, agender, etc.).
- Personal Experience: The way genderfluidity is experienced is unique to each individual. Some might feel their gender shifts frequently, while for others, it might change more slowly or infrequently.
It’s important to note that being genderfluid is about a personal, internal experience of gender. It’s distinct from being gender non-conforming, which refers to how a person expresses their gender, regardless of what that identity is. Genderfluid people may or may not use specific pronouns that reflect their shifting gender identity. Some might use they/them, while others may prefer he/him, she/her, or other pronouns depending on how they feel at a particular time.
In summary, genderfluidity highlights the fluid, changing nature of gender identity and expression. It’s one of the many identities that exist outside of the traditional male/female binary system.
What is the Genderfluid flag?
The genderfluid pride flag was created in 2012 by Max Disgrace to represent the genderfluid community. The flag consists of five horizontal stripes, each representing different aspects of the genderfluid experience. The colors and their meanings are:
- Pink (top stripe): Represents femininity or a female identity. This stripe reflects times when someone feels more aligned with traditionally feminine gender traits.
- Blue: Represents masculinity or a male identity. This stripe reflects times when someone feels more aligned with traditionally masculine gender traits.
- Purple: Represents a mix of both male and female genders, symbolizing a gender identity that combines aspects of both masculinity and femininity.
- Black: Represents a lack of gender or an agender identity. It reflects moments when a person feels gender-neutral, or without any particular gender.
- White (bottom stripe): Represents all genders or a sense of being gender-inclusive. It reflects the experience of having a gender identity that is fluid and may encompass multiple genders at once.
The design of the flag with these five stripes is meant to reflect the fluidity of gender as experienced by genderfluid people. The flag’s colors show the shifting nature of gender identity, where someone might feel aligned with different genders at different times or experience multiple genders simultaneously.
